Major Welsh data centre to open in 2009

One of the most advanced data centres in Europe is due to open in Newport, South Wales, next year.

The Next Generation Data Center 1 (NGD 1) is located close to carrier exchanges, the London area and a power substation, with double-skin walls and 750,000 sq ft of space.

Catering to a sharp increase in demand for IT services and hosting, the new facility will house secure operations.

Located in a former LG semiconductor factory built a decade ago, the new facility has been taken over by entrepreneurs who are developing the site into NGD 1.

Simon Taylor, NGD chairman, claims that the data centre, which is due to open in 2009, will have fibre internet connections provided by carriers BT, NTL and Cable and Wireless.

The £200 million 'carrier neutral' data centre will be home to thousands of server racks and NGD executives are hoping to attract some of the top names in the IT industry.
