Employees 'need email training'

UK employers should train their staff to use email more effectively, email management consultancy Mesmo has suggested.

According to its research, three-quarters of employees will spend around half of their day dealing with email, yet almost no companies offer their employees training in emails.

Mesmo managing partner Dr Monica Seeley stated that approximately 20 days a year are lost in productive working time due to staff dealing with unwanted people.

"This is an outrageous waste of a company's investment in people and needlessly adds to workplace stress," she said.

Ms Seeley singled out the cc function as one area of email technology where staff could improve - its survey showed that 88 per cent of respondents believe their colleagues do not use it appropriately.

It has been suggested that social networking and instant messaging could supersede emails in the future as the communications medium of choice for businesses.
