Businesses 'need better insight' to prevent data loss

Businesses need better insight into the way that data is stored and transmitted if they are to protect themselves from the steep costs associated with data loss, it has been suggested.

Research conducted by the Ponemon Institute on behalf of Lumension Security suggested that data breaches are the biggest cause of financial loss for enterprises. It estimated that each incident recorded costs $197 (£100), on average.

Mike Wittig, president of Lumension Security, said: "Not only are cybercriminals refining their methods for stealing confidential data, but information is being leaked or lost by employees and contractors who have direct access. As a result, enterprises that suffer a security breach face lost business, lawsuits, fines and brand damage.

"In order to protect the viability of the business, enterprises need to adopt proactive security methodologies that safeguard confidential information and ensure the public's trust."

Analyst IDC suggests that the most effective way to limit the threat of security breaches and subsequent data loss would be to combine data protection technology with government legislation. The research company added that protecting proprietary data stored on portable devices was a particular challenge for companies.

The Ministry of Defence this week announced that it will install encryption software on 20,000 of its RAF, Army and Navy laptops in order to limit the risk of data loss. It will install BeCrypt's Baseline software to protect information considered 'Classified' or 'Secret'.
