Businesses increase investment in VoIP technology
Despite questions regarding the current economic climate, enterprises are choosing to increase their investments in voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology, a new study has revealed.
According to market research firm iLocus, the number of VoIP access server licenses shipped around the globe increased by 67 per cent over the
last 12 months, while the overall volume of VoIP traffic also increased by 35 per cent.
The analyst explained that there is still no sign of any long-term slowdown in carrier spending, with companies forced to build out the IP infrastructure if they are to remain relevant, a position that means
they must continually invest in the technology.
"They have little choice, it seems," iLocus said in a statement. "Due to the losses in landlines, wireline operators are expanding into mobile and mobile operators on the other hand are
looking to leverage fixed broadband networks for voice offload or over-the-top services."
According to a recent research report from IDC, VoIP will be one of the main drivers of evolution in the market for personal IP communications, as
web service platforms, portals and mobile thin clients come to support 'voice as an application'.
