Web presence could be "important" for small businesses

Having a web presence could be key to raising the profile of a small business, according to the Managing Director of Startup Co.

John De Groot suggested that the importance of having a website will vary depending on the businesses' intention.

They may see a website as a way of creating sales, or "increasing the profile or credibility of the business, which is very important", he said.

In addition, companies may want to use the website as an "online business card", to provide information.

Mr De Groot named a number of things a website can illustrate, including achievements, clients, awards or opinion.

Referring specifically to the domain name, he recommended that it should be kept short and relevant to the aims of the business and advised against using hyphens.
