Green IT important to businesses' sustainability models

Enterprises in the manufacturing industry are using IT vendors and applications such sustainability programs and green schemes to reduce risks and costs as well as increasing revenue and profit.

That is according to a study from independent research firm Manufacturing Insights, which suggests that companies are looking to give IT an important role in supporting sustainability initiatives in product lifecycles and supply chains.

The analysts predict that IT organisations will begin planning different possible scenarios to guide their future sustainability efforts as they mature, in an effort to increase their company's competitive edge.

"Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," explained Kimberly Knickle, practice director emerging agendas at Manufacturing Insights.

"IT's role in company initiatives surrounding material selection, sourcing policies, resource consumption and emissions, end-of-life postponement and management, and customer and demand fulfilment are key in determining what to prioritise, what trade-offs to make and how to measure success."

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, business partnerships are key to achieving global sustainability and informing consumers of the importance of environmental practices and policies.
