Choice of domain names 'important' for small businesses

A spokesperson for Startup Co has recommended that small businesses should choose their website domain names carefully.

John De Groot, the company's managing director, suggested that domain names should be relevant to what the company is promoting and as short as possible, while hyphens should be avoided.

"If the website is promoting the name of the business, then a name that is the same as the businesses' name. If it is to promote a product, then consider a domain name that is the same as the product name," he advised.

Mr De Groot also recommended using keyword searches on Google and other search engines to find what words people are looking for most often.

Data shows that new domain name registrations reached 10.7 million during the first quarter of 2007, while generic names are becoming increasingly popular.
