Data problems can affect small businesses

A spokesperson for Small Business Computing has highlighted the important of data protection for businesses.

She warned that data loss could affect not only a business' finances, but also its "integrity" and "reputation".

"Losing data that is important can breach confidentiality," she added.

The spokesperson advised small businesses to ensure they have a security policy in place and that "good policies are enforced".

In addition, she suggested that disaster recovery needs to be considered and that firms should look at having a secondary back-up system off-site.

According to statistics from the Boston Computer Network, six per cent of all PCs will be affected by a data loss incident in any given year.

Meanwhile, 31 per cent of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.
