Firms need better bandwidth for remote workers

Research from proxy server appliance specialist Blue Coat Systems says that companies do not have enough bandwidth for remote workers to have fast and secure access to online systems.

A survey conducted by research company e-Media on behalf of Blue Coat revealed that remote workers are the least likely of all staff to use company networks for non-related activities, but that they were the largest security risk.

While it found that sales teams are the most likely to abuse the network within the office, remote workers were the most likely to unintentionally open the network to malware threats, IT Week reports.

Nigel Hawthorn, vice president of marketing at Blue Coat Systems, told the website: "You might assume that it is your remote workers that would be abusing company systems, but they are not. Perhaps they are more acutely aware of what happens when you hog bandwidth."

Last week, Aruba Networks and telecoms company Avaya announced that they are to collaborate on an IP-based voice and data access system specifically catered to the needs of remote workers.
