Emerging technologies could challenge IT industry
Over the next 25 years, a number of "IT Grand Challenges" will come into the fold as emerging technologies bear their influence on IT at the most fundamental of levels.
According to analyst Gartner, these grand challenges, to be overcome within the field of IT, will have significant impact on economic, scientific
and societal effects of business and live.
Analysing research papers, patents and prototype productions, Gartner identified a range of IT Grand Challenges including: devices that can be powered remotely, advances in parallel computing,
non-tactile natural computing interfaces, automated speech translation and reliable long-term storage.
"IT leaders should always be looking ahead for the emerging technologies that will have a dramatic impact on their business, and information on many of these future innovations are already in some
public domain," said Ken McGee, Gartner vice president.
"Today, CIOs should identify which Gartner IT Grand Challenges will be most meaningful for their enterprise. Then within the next 12 months, review patents for additional IT Grand Challenge
candidates."
Mr McGee advised enterprises to consider monitoring academic, government and corporate developments on emerging technologies that could be significant. "There are technologies on the
horizon that will completely transform your business," he added.
