Analyst: IT leaders should prepare for new wave of innovation

IT leaders have an opportunity to stimulate growth in their organisation by turning fear of a recession into an opportunity to innovate and change the way that they do business, it has been claimed.

According to analyst Gartner, companies need to prepare for the third kind of innovation - the first being when IT practitioners improve technical solutions to meet IT needs identified by IT people and the second being when they do so to meet business needs identified by business people.

Speaking at the Gartner Emerging Trends Symposium ITxpo 2008 in Las Vegas, Ken McGee, vice president, explained that new innovation requires businesses to capitalise on globalisation, improved connectivity, the socialisation and industrialisation of IT and technological advancements.

He said: "The third kind of IT innovation takes place when IT practitioners design innovative IT solutions to meet business needs that were identified and initiated by IT people.

"While innovation itself is the first imperative, focusing the value of IT to your organization over the coming years will require attention to five more imperatives," Mr McGee added.
