Research suggests leading enterprises improving BI management for strategic gains

Best-in-class companies are employing an array of capabilities to achieve improved data management performance for their business intelligence (BI) initiatives, according to Aberdeen.

The research company found that those firms operating in the top 20 per cent of its survey were able to reduce 'time-to-information' at four times the industry average.

It was also revealed that leading enterprises have achieved an average rise of 12 per cent in terms of employee productivity over the last year, compared to a three per cent average rise among industry average companies.

According to Aberdeen, these companies are employing capabilities such as the ability to understand end-user needs early in the implementation process, the establishment of query optimisation and prioritisation rules for data access and the ability to plan for data growth.

"As the sheer amount of information available for BI applications has grown and the sophistication of BI capabilities has accelerated, organisations are striving to improve time-to-information for business users," said David Hatch, BI research director at Aberdeen.

He explained that industry average companies had started making data storage and retrieval decisions based on cost rather than business need, something that has adversely affected business performance and return on investment (ROI) achieved by BI initiatives.
