Worldwide BI spending tipped to grow in 2008
Despite the high level of consolidation among business intelligence (BI) vendors last year, BI platforms will continue to grow at a steady rate, according to Gartner.
The research group forecast that the global market for BI platforms would reach $5.8 billion (£2.9 billion) in 2008, an 11.2 per cent increase over the previous year.
Looking further ahead, it predicted that the market would grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.1 per cent through to 2012, reaching $7.7 billion (£3.9 billion).
Gartner also said that it would be unlikely for any potential economic downturn to have a significant negative impact on the BI market because of the high priority which the platform is given by chief
information officers (CIOs).
In fact, it was voted as the most important technology priority for 2008 in a recent survey of 1,500 CIOs, a position that it has held for the last three years, explained Dan Sommer, senior research analyst
for Gartner.
"BI will be more resilient against the effects of a possible downturn in IT spending than some other technologies," he added. "Furthermore, the survey indicates that CIOs are looking to
increase their budgets for BI by about 11 per cent this year."
