Denbighshire revealed at top hotspot for SMEs

More new businesses started up in Denbighshire last year than in any other Welsh region, according to a report.

Against its performance in 2006, the number of start-ups increased by 30 per cent, from 600 to 800.

Meanwhile Anglesey was ranked second in the Barclays list, with a 20 per cent increase in new businesses, with Gwynedd in third place with 14 per cent.

Over the last five years an average of more than 20,000 new Welsh businesses have begun trading.

Across the UK 2007 was a record year for new businesses – the survey revealed that 471,500 started up, an increase of three per cent on the 457,200 started up in 2006.

Marketing director for Barclays Local Business John Davis said: "Over the last year close to 20 per cent of all starts were construction related demonstrating that Brits obsession with home improvement is far from over."

He also remarked that businesses closing ha also increased by eight per cent across the UK.
