Security and email 'top concerns' for SMEs

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMES) are most concerned by security and email management when it comes to using the internet, according to a new survey by broadband supplier UK Online.

The company's research revealed that SMEs are also adopting home working in far greater numbers as they attempt to increase employee flexibility and reduce commuting times, according to Computer Weekly.

However, 48 per cent of those who had implemented home working cited receiving too many irrelevant emails as the biggest annoyance, considering email management as one of the largest challenges facing them on the web.

Two thirds (65 per cent) of small companies also expressed their fears regarding internet security. The research noted that security incidents occur proportionately more often at SMEs than at larger enterprises.

Meanwhile, new research from the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Organisation has indicated that a greater number of SMEs are turning to teleworking as managers embrace the internet as a communications tool.
