Microsoft to offer hosted online business software services
Software developer Microsoft will launch its own cloud computing project to provide businesses with hosted software
services over the Internet.
Initial reports suggest that the software giant from Redmond, Washington, will begin by offering a hosted version of its Exchange e-mail server and services for collaborative working. However, further
services will be added later.
Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, said: "The combination of software plus services gives customers advanced choice and flexibility in how they access and manage software."
Firms that run their software as a service (SaaS) enjoy lower running costs, because there is no reason to buy and maintain the infrastructure required to operate applications on site.
They will be able to purchase Microsoft's online services on a per-use subscription basis, as part of the company's new SaaS licensing model.
Services were first rolled out at the end of last year to a limited number of customers, but Microsoft will offer its new products to all businesses from the second half of 2008.
It will also provide customers with Search Server 2008 Express, a free application that allows them to search for documents inside their network.
