Spam mail continues to rise
The proportion of email sent that can be classified as spam has risen to 95 per cent of all emails sent, according to reports from messaging system supplier Ipswitch.
This is the fifth successive quarter in which the proportion of spam has risen, comparing to 70 per cent just one year ago, IT website computerweekly.com reports.
The research revealed that 12 per cent of all messages are made up of phishing scams, while medication, pornography and gambling also proved to be consistently popular topics among spammers.
More worryingly, Clive Longbottom, director at analys firm Quocirca, told the website: "There are signs that a higher degree of spam is now
coming from groups such as organised crime, rather than individuals out for a quick win, and this type of approach needs to be stopped before it really take hold."
On a slightly better note, security specialist Sophos said that there was a dramatic downturn in the amount of PDF attachment spam being sent
out during August, but urged email users to remain cautious about opening unknown attachments.
