BT network to be fine tuned
BT's £10 billion IP network is to be sound-checked by expert listeners with finely tuned hearing, it was announced.
The team of audiophiles, known as the 'Golden Ears', will be used to make sure BT's new network infrastructure matches the quality of its existing voice network.
Team members have been selected specifically for their finely adjusted sense of hearing, which is equivalent to a refined wine palette or perfume-sensitive nose, BT announced.
Andy Heron, senior project manager for BT's voice network engineering, said: "There are jokes made about the Golden Ears tag but it's not about developing Superman-like hearing where you can hear a pin drop at five miles - it's more about being able to recognise, identify and determine the cause of the most subtle changes which would be imperceptible to most users."
He emphasised: "We have an array of technology to do the scientific measurement but it's human voices we're carrying across our network and human ears listening at the other end - the human experience and perception is all important."
The switchover from the previous network is to commence in Cardiff in 2006, with all BT services to be delivered by one dedicated IP network by the end of the decade.
