"The Data Protection Act requires anyone who handles personal information to comply with a number of important principles. It also gives individuals rights over their personal information."

In relation to employment, the Data Protection Act will generally apply to information you keep about your workers. Whilst the Act does not prevent you from collecting, maintaining and using
employment records, it does ensure you strike a balance between the employer's need to keep records and the worker's right to respect for their private life.
At the same time, the Act also applies to monitoring of staff at work. With the increasing use of workplace computers and hand held devices, there are increasing opportunities to track the activities of
your workers: monitoring of phone calls, email and web usage; actual e-surveillance using CCTV. You must be aware of the guidelines and limitations in this respect.
In her presentation Helen will highlight some of the key issues that SMEs need to be aware of regarding Data Protection Compliance in respect of employment issues including:
Recruitment and selection
Employment records
Monitoring at work
Information about workers' health
The rights of workers
