Translution have a vision of producing technologies to enable individuals to communicate with each other via email, without the need to read or write each others languages. The company launched Translution Pro in November 2005, and Sali Earls put it to the test for itwales.com.
Translution Pro is marketed as a "fully-functional product providing professional quality automated translation of email, Word attachments, Word documents and web pages," and at £59.95 is aimed very much at SMEs who want to communicate quickly and cost effectively with international suppliers, distributors and customers.
The product works as an "add in" for Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook, and has some software and hardware requirements before you begin:

Installation is straightforward, but requires closing down Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer in order for menus to be added to each. The product then requires activation, and this is completed through Outlook, by accessing the new Translution menu, selecting Activation and entering the activation code and other details as requested.
My grasp of foreign languages is vague to say the least, so I drafted an email to a multilingual colleague to see what the results would be in various languages. As you can see, the email briefly covers the contents of the January issue of itwales.com.
The idea of Translution Pro is that the email recipient will receive the communication automatically translated into their chosen language, and this is achieved by associated an email address with a language. Currently you can choose from French, German, Italian and Spanish, and can simply set the chosen language from the new Translution menu in the within the contact in Outlook.

The translation seems somewhat too literal, and although I tried to avoid strange expressions or colloquialisms, it has misinterpreted my meaning. For example, the line "I've had a great piece from Steve Woods of Informavores..." translates to "J'ai eu un grand morceau de bois de Steve d'Informavores...", which I believe means "I've had a big piece of wood from Steve of Informavores...". Maybe if I had used the term "article" or "document" rather than "piece" it would have been OK.
My name has also been translated from Sali Earls to Comtes de Sali, or Count Sali, but unlike using Translution with Word, where you can select text not to be translated, I could find no way of doing this here.
I tried the same original email in German and Spanish, with varying degrees of success.
As with the French, the German and Spanish translations changed my name and misinterpreted other points; but the Spanish translation proved particularly hard to read with strange symbols or capital letters in place of accented letters. This is most likely due to the recipient using an unsupported email package.
Using Translution Pro with Microsoft Word seemed better, and the user has more control over what elements of the document are translated.
To do this, you simply open your document and access the Translution menu, and as you can see from this image I have chosen not to translate my name.
You can then translate the whole document or selected parts, and set the original language, target language, the formality of the translation (whether formal or informal - more applicable to letters), and the dictionary profile if appropriate.
On clicking the translate button, you may expect an immediate translation to appear or at least a message box to tell you what is happening, but nothing seems to happen. In fact I tried this several times and thought that it wasn't working, before visiting the Translution website to find out what to expect.
The information on the website says "Moments later, the document arrives back translated into your chosen language." This is not strictly true. Several minutes passed, and in my frustration I checked the tips, readme file and finally the Translution Control Centre before the translation was available.
Although my French is not good, I can spot errors in this translation, although the misinterpretation of brand names from the translated article could have been avoided had I chosen not to translate them.
To complete the test I uninstalled the software via "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows Control Panel. With everything uninstalled, I reopened Outlook to the following message:

Translution Pro offers a wide range of features including support for HTML, RTF and plain text emails; translation of sent emails into multiple languages; translation of attachments automatically; language detection of web pages. It also offers a Dictionary Manager where the user can create and manage their own translation dictionary to improve translation accuracy over time.
There is no doubt that Translution Pro is superior to translation tools like Alta Vista Babel Fish, and the fact that it works within Outlook, Word and Internet Explorer makes it very attractive. However, it is not perfect taking everything a little too literally, and I would not put my trust in it translating important documents or emails at this stage in its development.
The joy of email communication is that you can generally afford to be a little more informal and colloquial, and the effort involved in honing a faultless email that can be translated safely without the risk of misinterpretation is perhaps too great; and with languages evolving at an increasing rate, it may take a significant amount of time before the users Dictionary is able to correctly interpret new meanings of words.
Translution Pro is available from the Translution website for £59.95, and if you are not satisfied with the product after 14 days, your subscription can be cancelled with a refund. Alternatively, Translution Light is available free of charge, with restricted functionality. With international business on the increase, the need to translate business information will become more important, so I suggest giving Translution Light a trial to see if it will work for you.

Vous pouvez alors traduire le document entier ou les pièces choisies, et placez la langue originale, la langue cible, la formalité de la traduction (si formel ou sans cérémonie - plus applicable aux lettres), et le profil de dictionnaire si approprié.
Sur cliquer traduire, vous pouvez s'attendre à ce qu'une traduction immédiate apparaisse ou au moins une boîte de message pour te dire que ce qui se produit, mais rien ne semble se produire. En fait j'ai essayé ceci plusieurs fois et ai pensé que cela ne fonctionnait pas, avant de visiter le site Web de Translution pour découvrir quoi prévoir.
L'information sur le site Web indique des " moments plus tard, le document arrive en arrière traduit en votre langue choisie. " Ce n'est pas strictement vrai. Plusieurs minutes ont passé, et dans mon anéantissement j'ai vérifié les bouts, le dossier de readme et finalement le centre de commande de Translution avant que la traduction ait été disponible.
Bien que mon Français ne soit pas bon, je peux repèrer des erreurs dans cette traduction, bien que l'interprétation fausse des noms de marque de l'article traduit pourrait avoir été évitée ait fait choisir I pour ne pas les traduire.
Pour accomplir l'essai j'uninstalled le logiciel par l'intermédiaire de " ajoute ou enlève des programmes " dans Windows Control Panel. Avec tout uninstalled, j'a rouvert Outlook au message suivant :

Il n'y a aucun doute que Translution Pro est supérieur aux outils de traduction comme Alta Vista Babel Fish, et le fait que cela fonctionne dans Outlook, Word et Internet Explorer le rend très attrayant.
Cependant, il n'est pas parfait prenant tout peu trop littéralement, et je ne mettrais pas ma confiance dans elle traduisant les documents ou les email importants à ce stade dans son développement.
La joie de communication d'email est que vous pouvez généralement se permettre d'être peu un plus sans cérémonie et familier, et l'effort impliqué en rectifiant un email parfait qui peut être traduit sans risque sans risque d'interprétation fausse est peut-être trop grand. Et avec des langues évoluant à un taux croissant, il peut prendre une quantité de temps significative avant que le dictionnaire d'utilisateurs puisse interpréter correctement de nouvelles significations des mots.
