Public Lecture to be delivered by Andy Hopper, University of Cambridge -"Wireless Communications Systems"

2.00pm-3.00pm
Wednesday 17 March,
Esso Lecture Theatre
Swansea University

Andy Hopper is Professor of Communications Engineering: Laboratory for Communication Engineering, Department of Engineering University of Cambridge. The title he has chosen for the lecture is 'Wireless Communications Systems.' Talking about the lecture he commented 'It has become possible to implement many wireless communication systems at low-cost. I will be giving an overview of such systems and also describing a fixed wireless access trial which is taking place in Cambridge. The trial provides up to 120 Mbps to users and shows how broadband can be provided where there is no cable.'

Andy Hopper studied computer technology at Swansea University before going to the Computer Laboratories in Cambridge in 1974 to start his PhD. Hopper's PhD was on local area communications network, and he developed a system known as the Cambridge Ring, which was a serious contender to the Ethernet.

Technology developed as a result of this research led to the development of the BBC microcomputers by Acorn, a company founded jointly with Herman Hauser in the 1970s. This was to become the most successful UK company in terms of personal wealth creation. Eventually, Acorn was taken over by ARM, which itself became one of Cambridge's biggest success stories.

The admission to this lecture is free but a ticket is required.
